The Orthodox-Catholic Church of America is part of the Universal Church by virtue of receiving its episcopacy from the Syrian Orthodox (Jacobite) Patriarch of Antioch, through the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church of India. Vilatte's consecration as archbishop for North America was according to the Latin rite and he continued to use this rite for the rest of his life. Before he could be consecrated he was examined and had to make a confession of faith acceptable to the Jacobite patriarch and bishops who authorized and performed his consecration. Such a confession of faith would have been based on the teachings of the councils preceding that of Chalcedon. This means that in our origins we are a Church of the Three Councils, not a Church of the Seven Councils, as some Orthodox churches are. [ Our History].
